LG Washer OE Error Code: How to Fix a Drain Problem
The washer displays "OE" (or "DE" on some models), stops draining, and won't advance to spin.
DIY Cost
$0–$10
Typical Pro Cost
$120–$250
Tools Needed
- Shallow pan or towels
- Flathead screwdriver (for the filter door)
- Needle-nose pliers
Parts Needed
- None for most fixes — a replacement drain pump only if the filter and hose are already clear
⚠️ Safety Warnings
- Unplug the washer before opening the pump filter door — water and electrical connections can be close together on some models.
- Expect residual water (up to a few cups) when opening the filter — have towels and a shallow pan ready.
- Never run the washer with the filter door open or the filter removed.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Check the drain hose for kinks
Pull the washer out from the wall enough to see the drain hose. A kinked, crushed, or overly high drain-hose loop is a common cause of OE — the hose needs a clear, downward path with no more than about 8 feet of horizontal run.
Clear the drain pump filter
Most LG front-load washers have a small access door in the bottom-left corner. Open it, place a shallow pan underneath (water will come out), and unscrew the filter cap slowly. Remove any lint, coins, or debris and check that the small impeller inside spins freely.
Check for a clogged or kinked inlet to the pump
With the filter out, look and feel inside the pump housing for anything lodged in the drain path — small items like socks, bra underwires, and coins are common culprits.
Inspect the external drain standpipe
If the hose and filter are clear, the clog may be further downstream in your home's drain standpipe. Detach the hose and check that water flows freely into the standpipe.
Reset and run a drain/spin cycle
Reinsert the filter, reconnect the hose, and run the washer's dedicated "Drain & Spin" cycle to confirm water clears without the code returning.
When to Call a Professional
If the filter and hose are clear but the washer still won't drain, the drain pump motor itself may have failed — this requires disassembling the front of some models to access, and replacing the pump if a multimeter check confirms no continuity.
